Assistive Technology Plan
1.Joel is Grade 10 and he has a reading disability and poor spelling skills. He loves photography and works part-time at a photo-processing center. He has difficulties reading certain words and also has trouble reading the directions to use the photo processing equipment. He wants to publish his photo and work with others to publish theirs. His co-workers complain they can't read his notes for customers orders.
Q What AT could you suggest that he and his employer use to address these issues?
A. Having a tape recorder handy will help as he can record the customers orders, co workers can then listen to the instructions. Joel should also use the Co: writer to help him with words that a problematic, he should also a word list of familiar words so he can refer to them as he needs. Having a pictorial representation of the steps to use the equipment will eliminate the confusion
2. Linda has cerebral palsy and has limited use of her upper extremities. She cannot hold a pencil to write but can use a trackball and computer keyboard. She also has limited vision and has difficulty reading small print. She loves digital art and appreciates painting.
Q. How would you coach this youth and what AT could you investigate to accommodate her desire in becoming a digital artist/painter?
A. Having a sheet of magnifying glass could help het to read fine prints, obtaining a digital art soft ware program and exploring Tux Paint can help her with her desire to become an artist. Using the Eye-gaze system can allow her more independence to be creative without a painting tool in he hand.
3. Harry is mute, but he loves music. he is taking a distance learning music class on the internet. He has been doing well in the class communicating with the class via email; now the students are required to participate in a phone discussion as a group assignment

Q Is there a way he can participate in the phone conference or should the instructor adapt the assignment differently for him? What solutions can you find for him?
A. Teacher should adapt the requirements for him and allow him to get the questions ahead of time so he can email his contribution in as usual via email. Another suggestion is rather than have a telephone conference have a Google group live chat where everyone can actively participate. Harry should also consider learning sign language as it will be beneficial as he continues his studies.
